I Tried It: Ford Escape’s Drivable Escape the Room Game
You may not know this about me, but I am obsessed with puzzles — like completely 100% obsessed. I can spend hours playing online escape games, so you could imagine my excitement when I was invited to experience the world’s largest live Escape the Room game.
Ford Escape teamed up with puzzle mastermind Victor Blake for what can be described as the most innovative test-drive experience ever. From June 23-26, in the world’s first-ever drivable Escape the Room game, players get a chance to explore Ford’s latest features while trying to beat the clock.
“Ford asked if I’d be up for integrating the new Escape into an Escape the Room game, and the end result is unlike anything I’ve created before,” said Blake. “The SUV is packed with tons of advanced technology, and it was an entertaining exercise to integrate things like ultrasonic parking sensors into the puzzles and clues that are iconic to the game.”
If you’re not familiar with Escape the Room, it’s basically a game in which players are “trapped” in a room and must find and use clues to escape before time runs out. The concept is pretty simple. The game, not so much.
I attended the press preview at the Moynihan Station in Midtown Manhattan yesterday where me and other media professionals took the new ride for a spin. The game requires a driver’s license and a team and since I had none of those things (being the cliche New Yorker and solo freelance writer that I am), I was paired with another team. I’m always up for meeting new people, and I happened to join the fabulous blogger LeAura Luciano of Ever So Popular, her sister fitness guru Layla Luciano, and their dad Richard.
We had six minutes to escape each of the five rooms, hopping into our 2017 Ford Escape between each destination. The short drives integrated the use of Ford’s special features, including the Lane-Keeping Alert, mobile device Sync Connect, and the Enhanced Active Park Assist, which is a feature that basically finds a spot and parks the car for you — robots are totally going to take over this planet, btw. The escape rooms were especially quirky. From a tiny NYC apartment, to a Brooklyn art party, to finally a TriBeca Film Festival, we escaped our way into victory (well…sorta. There’s an office room escape that was just a major fail for nearly everyone who played the game yesterday. It was so hard!)
I have to give props to Ford for this incredibly clever and interactive product preview. Their aim was to connect to millennial buyers by using trendy and engaging tactics — mission accomplished.
“We’re constantly looking for new ways to connect with consumers and teaming up with Escape the Room allowed us to create a unique and unexpected experience to introduce our new Ford Escape and our technologies,” said Ginger Kasanic, Ford experiential marketing manager.
So was it like an online escape game? No, it’s way harder because you’re actually in a room and clues are physical. If you’re an escape game nerd like me, you know we rely on every number, color, shape, and symbol for clues. In real life, your clues are limited and there are A LOT of red herrings. Your wits have to be sharp!
