‘The Family’ is Cancelled! 3 Ways It Can Get a Second Season

Day 15 of 31

This is my first and, unfortunately, last review of ABC’s late great show The Family. If you’re not familiar with the show, it’s about a political family whose missing son Adam returns home after 10 years. Except, that it may not really be Adam, but an imposter! Is Adam dead? Is he still missing? Who’s this guy? No one knows and I guess no one will ever get the end of the story, because ABC cancelled the series. Ugh! Good shows die young….unless it’s from ShondaLand.

As much as I got into the show, I have to admit that I did see the cancellation coming. The storyline was super slow, and not in the crafty, slow-but-steady, build a la Breaking Bad. The Family‘s pace was painfully dragged week to week until only a few episodes ago. You can’t develop a storyline this slow in a tv world of fast-paced drama and straight-to-the-point plots. You’ll get left behind and that’s exactly what happened to The Family. Now that the show has finally proven itself, fans are fighting (basically tweeting to ABC) for a revival.

Sunday night’s season  (now series) finale ended with a major plot twist, and duh, cliffhanger. I wholeheartedly believe that The Family has promise and deserves a second season. But here’s the route they should take:

Go to Netflix: Continue the show on Netflix. The Family has too slow of a storyline to really entice viewers to tune in next week. This show just screams binge-watch. In fact, that’s actually how I got into the show. I watched the first episode, which was a little interesting, then I waited for a few weeks to pass by before I did a  proper binge session. It was way more enjoyable to see the story unfold all at once. Plus, a show like this doesn’t really engage social media. If no one is tweeting about your show, there’s no need to have it air week after week. Might as well just stream the whole season at once.

Shake up the cast: GET RID OF DETECTIVE NINA AND THE HUSBAND. OMG these characters are the absolute worst. I hate when tv writers try to pander to audiences based on popular elements of other shows. The whole Nina and John (Mayor Claire Warren’s hubby) love affair is soooo obviously inspired by the scandalous interracial relationship of Olivia Pope and President Fitz. This side plot was unnecessary and short lived. Admit it, ya’ll was just trying to appeal to black women audience (because really BW are perhaps the most influential and active consumers of media today). You didn’t need to force this boring love triangle. Also, Detective Nina sucks at her job. In fact, the whole police department is just horrible. They are always so wrong and late about everything. Back to the husband: John Warren, yes, he is such a boring character. No offense to the actor but maybe a recast would help. More unsolicited advice: Can the older brother (played by Zach Gilford) be more than just a cliche? We get it, he’s an alcoholic. He doesn’t need to have a glass of brown juice in hand every time he’s on screen. Alison Pill (who plays the daughter Willa Warren) is perfect and Joan Allen (who plays Mayor Claire Warren) is great.

Get to the point: I love a good mystery. I love suspense. But please, for the love of all things loveable, get to the point! The first 3 weeks of The Family could have been done in one episode. I don’t mind stories that keep me guessing, but please don’t keep me bored. If The Family does get another season, I hope it picks up the pace.

That’s all the expert advice I have for now. Hopefully we’ll find out what happens to the Warren family after that unexpected finale.
