SNL Ladies Get Sexy for Cosmo and It’s a Problem
The funny ladies of Saturday Night Live are featured in the May issue of Cosmopolitan but not everyone is laughing about it. In the slumber party themed editorial, the SNL women don silky pajamas and robes, with some sleepwear being sexier than others. The debate is: “They’re funny! Why do they have to dress so sexy for the magazine?” The naysayers of the story argue that when men, particular funny men (like the SNL dudes), get a mag feature, they never have to be shirtless or look sexy. Their comedy is enough.
I find nothing wrong with the photoshoot. Yes, Sasheer Zamata is in her undies and maybe Nasim Pedrad’s shorts were a bit short. But why is that so wrong? In defense of the shoot, there’s actually some humor involved. If you’re offended by the images and cry “objectification,” I dare you to question yourself why you could not look past the attire and see the rest of the content. There’s nothing hot and steamy about Kate McKinnon’s pose (well, except for the pizza maybe). Could it be possible that you believe a woman’s worth or depth is only determined by what she has on? No one in the shoot was seductively sucking their finger or spreading eagle. All I see are some hilarious gals in cute and sassy outfits perfectly fit for the publication that it’s in.

Feminism, the most trendy cause today, somehow can’t seem to find peace when it comes to sexuality. Working women, equal pay, and empowerment are unanimously agreed upon. Race is still a rocky discussion. But sexuality, a woman’s right to feel good for herself AND, controversially, for her lover is looked down upon. What is wrong with being sexy and how does sex appeal diminish a woman’s “feminist score?” Beyonce got a ton of heat for her scandalous “Partition” song and video. Never mind the fact that she was embracing her body and sensuality, she should not dare show skin because she is a wife and a mother. Meanwhile, married dad David Beckham is damn-near naked at every turn and no one complains (I know I don’t). If feminism is all about female empowerment and equality without limits, how can we limit each other by these unrealistic and stifling standards of what it means to be a “good woman?”
