Day 29 of 31

When I get ready in the mornings, I listen to music to jolt up my energy. But sometimes, I like to listen to motivational speeches to prepare me for my day or improve my current mindset.  Yesterday I watched an amazing Ted Talk video featuring Mel Robbins. Her presentation was called “How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over.” I don’t know a person on this planet who couldn’t use advice from a speech of that title.

Throughout her talk, Robbins discussed self-motivation and the importance of pushing ourselves to not only do what we want to do, but what we need to do — because, if we’re being honest, the stuff we need to do are never things we want to do at all. As I was yasss-ing, grunting, and snapping my fingers in affirmation, Robbins said something that will stick with me forever.

“Your mind can process a facial expression in 33 milliseconds. The other thing that it does pretty quickly, is if you have one of those little impulses that are pulling you, if you don’t marry it with an action within five seconds, you pull the emergency break and kill the idea. […] Your problem isn’t ideas, your problem is that you don’t act on them.”

So many times that little lightbulb in our heads lights up. Whether it be an idea about a new invention, a new business, or a new activity to try. When we don’t act on them, they just fade away. As a writer, I know for a fact that following a creative impulse is a major key to productivity. Whenever I feel the words coming to me, I don’t care where I am or what I am doing, I simply find somewhere to write. I have to follow that impulse or else I’ll lose it. This blog post is a result of impulse. I’m actually in the middle of getting ready to head out but I just had to get this post through.

In the words of Louise Gluck, “the days were very long while the years were very short.” Life runs without a speed limit. If you blink, you might miss it. I get a little sad whenever I think of how many “some days” and “tomorrows” I promised myself that never made it to today. I know too many people  who left their dreams in the back of their minds. Time runs quickly but it isn’t running out. That’s not to say  get comfortable and continue with your forever “tomorrows” or “some days,” but to know that there is no need to wait for another day to do what you can do right now.

I hope you guys feel as inspired as I do from the video. I urge you to follow that five second rule. If you see someone you want to talk to, if there’s a class you want to join, if there is anything that you are interested in for the betterment of your life — just do it.
Now get out there and impress yourself! See you tomorrow.
