Kendrick Lamar Covers GQ and Talks Tupac Sighting

kendrick gq coverHip-hop’s most-buzzed about rookie, Kendrick Lamar, closes out his successful year with not only a tour gig with Kanye West, but also a year-end cover of GQ. The men’s fashion mag dubbed K. Dot as ‘Rapper of the Year;” and rightfully so. The “Money Trees” artist has been in control since he came on the scene.  GQ cleans up the rapper in some fancy preppy designer duds. He looks cute but I prefer Kendrick in his usual white tee and Nike Cortez.  In his cover story, the 26-year-old Comptonite opens up about his double life as both a industry elite and hood figure,  his grapples with fame, his Tupac ghost sighting (yeah),  and of course his beef with Drake. Check out the highlights below.

About that time Tupac’s ghost paid a visit
“I was coming from a late studio session, sleeping on Mom’s couch. I’m 26 now—it wasn’t that long ago. I remember being tired, tripping from the studio, lying down, and falling into a deep sleep and seeing a vision of Pac talking to me. Weirdest shit ever. I’m not huge on superstition and all that shit. That’s what made it so crazy. It can make you go nuts. Hearing somebody that you looked up to for years saying, ‘Don’t let the music die.’ Hearing it clear as day. Clear as day. Like he’s right there. Just a silhouette.”

What he learned from Tupac’s visit
“It wasn’t just about money, hos, clothes, drinkin’,” he explains. “I mean, I come from that world, but at the same time, I started to realize that there’s people out there that can’t really connect to that lifestyle. They’re in the struggle.”

Is he cool with Drake?
“Pretty cool.” Shrugs. “And I mean, I would be okay if we weren’t.”

On what his new fashion industry fans should really be thinking when they invite him to perform a set
“We invited Kendrick Lamar, not K.Dot and them Piru niggas.”

What’s next after good kid  m.A.A.d city?
“It depends on where my emotion is. How angry I’ll be, or how happy I’ll be, or how confused I’ll be.”
