DIY Faux Locs Review
Recently, I tried on a new look – faux locs. I’ve been seeing trendy style all over Instagram and Tumblr and just had to give it a try. Dreadlocks have always intrigued me but honestly I simply can not commit to the permanent ‘do. The temporary style was perfect for the dramatic change I was seeking and a great protective wear. See details and tips below.
Cost: $43 -$70 depending on your hair supply store and how much hair you purchase. My style cost me $43 – way less than it would cost to get it professionally done ( think $180-200+).
Labor time: 11 hours (I advise you do this style on a lazy weekend. You’ll need the whole day and some night to get it done).
What you’ll need:
- 10 packs of hair is fine for medium sized locs. I went the eco-friendly route and bought 5 packs of kanekalon and 5 packs of marley/afro hair. Kanekalon hair cost no more than $2/pack, while marley can cost $6/pack.
- rat tail comb
- clips for separating hair
- Your favorite hair moisturizing lotion (I used an olive oil based cream)
- Your favorite hair oil (I used coconut and tea tree)
- A lighter

How to do it:
First, wash your hair. I recommend Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Pure-Castile soap. Then give your hair a good conditioning. I did a quick detangling condition with VO5 then I gave my hair a nourishing 20 minute deep condition with avocado cholesterol cream. It’s super important to make sure your hair is really moisturized as it will be wrapped underneath a lot of hair. It’s best to let your hair air dry but I was impatient so I did a low-heat blow dry. Moisturize your hair with oils and lotion.
I watched the three videos below to help me form my own technique. I basically did a 2-strand twist with my own hair and box-braided it with the kanekalon. Then I wrapped it with marley, tied a knot at the end and burned a closure. Very simple yet requires focus and detail to get it looking just right. Even though it took me 11 hours, I found the process to be very therapuetic. Just sit in front of a mirror, put on Netflix or watch a marathon of something ( I watched Three’s Company) and enjoy the locking.
Review
Pros:
- Get dreadlocks without commitment
- Ready to go hairstyle
- Easy to DIY as it does not need to look too perfect
- Easy to add color without dyeing actual hair
- Very protective hairstyle
- Hair is very flexible and offer various hairstyles
- Budget friendly
- Perfect way to revamp old braids or twists — just wrap them with marley to make it a dread (this also cuts the labor time in half).
- Easy removal (cut the ends and slide the wrap right off. Removal took me just 1 hour).
- You’ll be the object of serious hair envy
Cons:
- The wrap tends to slip after a while so be sure to do a real tight wrap the first time.
- Marley hair can get a little fuzzy and can cause some tangling.
- Hair can be really heavy. The longer the heavier.
- May cause dryness around the neck
- Long labor time
- Very short-term hairstyle (I left mine in for 2 weeks because I was over it and I was over re-wrapping and I missed my fro. I would leave it in for a month at most but I know girls who had theirs in for just a bit over a month).
- Fear that the real dreadhead sitting beside you on the subway is judging you…HARD.
Tips:
- Co-wash your scalp at least once a week
- Moisturize your scalp daily to avoid itch and irritation
- Although this method is pricier, braid with marley and wrap with marley. The wrap tends to slip off of kanekalon easily.
- Re-wrap using beeswax
- Do it yourself! Or at least have a friend do it for you. This style is too easy to pay hundreds for.
Overall: This was a great hairstyle. I received plenty compliments! I will definitley do this style again. The length I had was just past my shoulders. Next time I will make the length longer so that I can do more updo styles. Faux locs is one of my favorite looks for sure!
