A few years ago OWN aired the riveting documentary, Dark Girls. The film explored the complexities of colorism and the social and emotional experiences faced by dark skinned black women. Listening to  the commentary of fellow black women sharing stories that sounded way too familiar definitely brought on some tears. All my life I’ve suffered the backhanded “you’re pretty for a dark skin girl” compliments, cruel comparisons to my lighter skin sistas, and a threatened self-esteem.  After sparking the conversation about the otherwise ignored topic of colorism and self-hatred within black culture, filmmaker Bill Duke (one of the directors of the documentary) expands on the message with a beautiful photobook.
