Alicia Keys’ Makeup-Free Lifestyle is Boring AF
A few weeks ago, Alicia Keys attended the MTV Video Music Awards with a makeup-free face and the world lost their shit. The reactions were so dramatic that Alicia’s husband Swizz Beatz had to come out and DEFEND his wife for wearing her natural face in public. I’m probably the minority in this Alicia Keys no-makeup debate. I’m neither inspired by or against it. I just don’t see what the big deal is. In fact, if it weren’t for the news articles, I probably wouldn’t have even noticed that she wasn’t wearing makeup.
When I saw Alicia at the MTV Video Music Awards, the only thing I noticed was her hair and outfit. She looked like that woke vegan auntie who travels to Africa every year. I’m into it! Her skin is fresh and beautiful. Why would she even need makeup? Not saying that makeup is limited to enhancing your natural features — it’s also a great form of creative expression.

Maybe it’s because I, and the women in my life, are and have always been mostly makeup-free. In my world, a trip to Sephora is only made during my birthday season. And even then, I’m probably only walking out with lipstick. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-makeup. I have spent hours watching YouTube video tutorials on contouring, highlighting, and even “baking.” I admire the beauty gurus of the world and I wish I could rock a full face of makeup on the daily. But the way my bank account is set up….ain’t nobody spending hundreds of dollars on brushes and creams. Most of my play money goes towards food and wine (which I really shouldn’t be buying so often….I really need to work on saving). Anyway, my daily “look” is basically just lipstick. If I’m feeling extra purty or I’m headed somewhere special, I also put on eye makeup (liner + shadow + mascara) and blush (which is also lipstick). But that’s about it. My makeup tools would offend anyone who respects the craft. I don’t have a brow brush, I use my rat tail hair comb. I don’t have a collection of brushes; tiny pads and fingers do the trick. And the only blender I have is the one that makes me smoothies. The older I get the more I embrace how basic I am when it comes to ~*beauty*~.
Speaking of beauty lovers, apparently some of Keys’ naysayers believe she is trying to promote anti-makeup (makeupism?) We can’t deny that there is a negative stigma about women who wear makeup — because you know, damned if we do, damned if we don’t. There’s the tired old judgement of “you’re so fake,” or “take them swimming before the first date,” and of course the BS concern for your self-esteem,“why are you hiding your natural beauty?” Apparently there’s no way to really win in the beauty game. But getting back to the point, Alicia Keys is not trying to deter you from your countered noses and mink lashes. The singer had to put out a Twitter statement to clarify that her choice to go makeup-free is a personal one and that she has no intentions of shaming makeup enthusiasts.
I get it, every famous woman dons a full face of makeup and *GASP* Alicia Keys isn’t. It’s just silly to me that a woman baring her makeupfree skin to the world is breaking news. Women are scrutinized for everything. Look at the amount of pregnancy rumors that spark whenever a celebrity lady gains weight. Girl, if I was famous, I’d be “pregnant” every week. Imagine living in a world where you can’t be bloated or fresh-faced without it being some national story. Not saying celebs are disadvantaged, because trust, I’d switch paychecks any day. But it must suck to have the world watch and criticize your every move.
TLDNR: Alicia Keys not wearing makeup isn’t revolutionary, it’s boring AF. I don’t mean that in a bad way. I just mean that wearing your natural skin should be beautifully ordinary.
